PARTY OF ONE: Ways to Beat Valentine’s Day Stress

Millions of adults in our country are single through choice or through chance on this day every, single year. The media saturation that begins immediately after New Year’s Day puts a great deal of stress on single people to “find someone special” to spend the day with. We are hard wired to listen to the opinions of others, despite our best efforts. So if everyone around us is saying that we should be in a relationship, then we feel like losers if we aren’t!

But can I be honest? People in close love relationships feel a great deal of pressure as well! Couples are made to feel that they have to go “over the moon” to please their partners on this day. The entire phenomenon of Valentine’s Day in our culture is driven by an industry that needs us to spend money. Did you know that floral wholesalers and retailers make enough money on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day to support them the rest of the year? It’s true!

So let’s get our focus off of this passing materialistic culture and its stressful demands that we overspend, overeat, and overemphasize sensuality on a particular calendar date. Let’s start a new conversation about how to have a party of one…YOU! We are all in relationship with ourselves, and we spend more time with ourselves than with anyone else on earth. If you want to respect yourself, and feel great while doing it, you need to be good to yourself. No one else can do these things for you.

Tomorrow . . . Step One!
